A good season - 1964Directions to DeepdaleSir Tom FinneyThe PNE Story
April was another interesting month with PNE ending up as a candidate for the play-offs up to the final day. PNE losing to Derby at home on 2nd April was a very significant result as Derby pipped PNE to the play-offs by 2 points. Similarly drawing at home to Norwich in late April was 2 points lost. Nevertheless not many would have forecast PNE ending 7th.
Top scorers: Sean Maguire 10, Jordan Hugill 10, Alan Browne 9, Tom Barkhuizen 8, Callum Robinson 7.
John Welsh, 34,is to leave after 143 games and 6 years.
An interesting month with 2 away wins, a home defeat and a heavy away defeat at Sheffield Wed.
Six points from 5 games wasn't too good a haul. Losing at home to Ipswich, although drawing at home to high flying Wolves and Aston Villa isn't too bad.
Ending the month with a 3-0 win at Notts Forest recovered the lost points of the month. Selling Jordan Hugill for £10m to West Ham, currently managed by David Moyes was good business. Alex Neale saying he hadn't been the same since his transfer request before the season was rejected.
PNE are 3 points from the play-off positions.
The team against Notts Forest was:
1 Rudd,
14 Fisher,
5 Clarke,
23 Huntington,
32 Earl,
4 Pearson substituted for Moultat 85 minutes,
12 Gallagher substituted for Johnson at 80 minutes,
39 Bodin booked at 75mins,
8 Browne,
29 Barkhuizen,
37 Robinson substituted for Horganat 88 minutes.
Substitutes:
7 Horgan,
10 Harrop,
11 Johnson,
15 Woods,
17 Spurr,
21 Moult, 22 Maxwell.
A very good December with 4 wins and 2 draws. An away win at high flying Cardiff as the last game of the year adding cream.
Four points from five matches saw another poor month although things are beginning to look up with an away win at Bristol City and a draw at Norwich in the last games. Losing 2-0 at home to Aston Villa and 3-0 away at Ipswich in the first 2 games of the month spoilt the goal difference.
A poor October saw PNE get only 1 point in 3 games after being only seconds away from the 2nd spot when Fulham equalised at the end of the game in mid-October. Losing 3-2 away at top placed Wolves and then 3-2 at home to in form Brentford didn't seem so bad but the first game of November they lost 2-0 to Villa, also on a run, at home. Warning signs are up. Injuries to defenders are being put down to the defeats with up to 5 being injured.
Simon Grayson who left PNE for Sunderland before the season has been sacked with Sunderland in the relegation zone. Everton have also sacked their manager.
Two good away wins at Hull and Birmingham kept PNE in the play off zone after 3 home draws and a big win against Cardiff. Ex PNE manager Simon Grayson brought Sunderland to Deepdale on the last day of September, after PNE overturned an away goal to take the lead Sunderland equalised.
Respectable position with an amazingly low For/Against tally. PNE's striker Hugill puts in a written transfer request a day before the window closes after interest from other clubs. The request is rejected. Two 1-0 wins and one 1-0 defeat starts the season with 0-0 draws at Leeds and Middlesbrough. . Plus a defeat in the League Cup at Accrington Stanley.

Alex Neale formerly of Norwich and Hamilton has been signed as the new PNE manager on a one year rolling contract. Neale left Norwich in March after guiding them to the Premier league but being unable to keep them there in the previous season..
29th June 2017 Simon Grayson moves to Sunderland.
Quite a blow the respected manager takes former PNE manager David Moyes former job. Grayson was often praised for the job done at Preston, always with the preface 'on a limited budget'. PNE said they are in no hurry to find a replacement.
